Major in LAS

The interdisciplinary major in Latin American Studies is intended for students with an interest in the Latin American region and its diaspora. It offers students a range of course choices in a variety of fields in the Arts and Sciences. The major consists of 30 credits, of which 15 credits must be at the 300 level or above, completed with a grade of C or better.

Students select courses within the following required categories:

I. Core course (3 credits)

  • Latin America: An Introduction (01:590:101)

II. Required courses (18 credits)

A. History (3 credits, one of the following is required):

  • Colonial Latin America (01:508:260)
  • Modern Latin America (01:508:262)
  • Latin America & the United States (01:508:264)
  • History of Brazil (01:508:360)
  • History of Mexico (01:508:362)
  • Gender in Latin American History (01:508:369)
  • History of Cuba (01:508:370)

B. Social Sciences (6 credits in any 2 of the following)

  • Anthropology of Latin America (01:070:223)
  • Geography of Latin America (01:450:336)
  • Change in Latin America (01:790:312)
  • Latinos and Migration (01:595:298) OR Latinos and Community (01:595:299)

C. Spanish-American or Brazilian Literature, Culture, and Art History (6 credits total, courses with a Latin American focus): 

  • Student Choice
  • Student Choice

(01:940:215 and 01:810:310 may fulfill both the language requirement and a student choice in this category).

D. Seminar (3 credits):

  • Seminar in Latin American Studies (01:590:401 or 402)

III. Elective courses (9 credits, minimum of 6 credits at level 300 or above; electives may include courses listed above not selected as required courses)

  • Student Choice (any level)
  • Student Choice (level 300+)
  • Student Choice (level 300+)

IV. Language proficiency requirement

  • Spanish 01:940:215 or 01:940:261 (or above) OR
  • Portuguese 01:810:201 or 203 (or above)

Students are encouraged to take a placement exam at the language lab to determine

Students may contact Prof. Ulla Berg, CLAS Director to request approval for courses with significant Latin American content that may not appear here.
