Incarcerated in the Dominican Republic, an inmate uses sign language to communicate with his imprisoned girlfriend at an adjacent institution. Carpinteros/Woodpeckers won Best Director, Best Actor and Special Jury Prize at the Guadalajara Film Festival and Toulouse Latin American Film Festival. Carpinteros was the Dominican Republic’s official submission for the Foreign Language Oscar in 2017.

Jueves de Cine is organized by the Center for Latin American Studies (CLAS) and co-sponsored by the Cinema Studies Program, and the Department of Latino and Caribbean Studies.
