The Department of American Studies is hosting ACLS Emerging Voices Fellow Leopoldo Peña for the current academic year.  Dr. Peña is a professional photographer and a recent Ph.D. from the University of California.  His work focuses on photography during Mexico’s post-revolutionary reconstruction years (1920s -1930s) and how photography was essential to illustrate nationalist projects through which a progressive image of the nation was projected. He shows how photography was more than a visual and technical device at the service of nationalist ideals and rethinks photography as an essential discursive apparatus that complemented, rewrote and magnified different nationalist currents at work during the reconstruction years.

Leopoldo will be presenting his work for CLAS in the Spring Semester.
