Queer Aqui Rio: An International Symposium
Thursday, May 25, 2023, 10:00am - 07:00pm

Together in Hard Times / Juntos em tempos difíceis

On May 25, 2023 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil Working Group members including Professor Daniel da Silva will be participating in Queer Aqui Rio. Queer Aqui focuses on questions about the reliance of new right-wing populist regimes on homophobic, transphobic and misogynist ideologies. At the same time, they think about multiple forms of queer and trans life in Rio, and in the global south in general, which craft creative, powerful and impactful responses to these new forms of oppression. The combination of roundtables outlining the struggle on the one hand and others mounting various forms of aesthetic resistance on the other should allow audiences to both reckon with the reality of the hard times we are all in but not succumb to the idea that no response is possible.

They are hosting a one-day symposium in Rio de Janeiro, with amazing panelists and performers, to talk about the challenges and joy of Queer life in our contemporary moment and on a global scale. About 36 people will be involved, many from Rio, and they are giving back to local organizations and individuals to help support their work.
