The War Against Immigration: Politicizing A Humanitarian Crisis
Monday, November 27, 2023, 12:00pm - 01:30pm

The purpose of the lecture is to share Mr. San Miguel's experience as an Immigration Attorney on an area that shares hundreds of border miles with Mexico. He will share his views on how the politization of the issue has overshadowed the purpose and nature of Immigration Laws and has created an environment in which immigration policies are subject to the political party in power instead of the Immigration Laws. The lecture will help to understand how both political parties have used immigration for political benefit, setting aside the best interests of the community. Such politization has created uncertainty on the possibility of an effective immigration reform. Additionally, Mr. San Miguel will share his experience of how these changes in policy directly affect the functionality of the Immigration Courts.

Alejandro San Miguel was born and raised in Puerto Rico. He graduated Cum Laude from the University of Puerto Rico and obtained his Juris Doctor from the Interamerican University School of Law. Throughout his career, he has worked as a private practitioner on several different areas of law, including criminal, civil and administrative law. Since 2014 his main practice has been Immigration Law in the Rio Grande Valley in Texas. He is currently a Partner at the Law Offices of Valdez, Monarrez & San Miguel, where he has represented hundreds of clients who have been or are currently in removal proceedings from the United States, before the Unites States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), the Executive Office of Immigration Review (EOIR), the Board of Immigration Appeals (BIA), and the Administrative Appeals Office (AAO).
